Odawara

When Bill came over to Japan for the first time, we decided to make a quick stop at Odawara on our way back from Hakone. It turned out to be a brilliant decision! Odawara is not just any city—it’s a treasure trove of history, culture, and natural beauty nestled in Kanagawa Prefecture. This place really showcases some of Japan’s finest, from its iconic castle and stunning ocean views to the relaxing onsen (hot springs) that are perfect for unwinding.

The star of the show in Odawara is definitely the Odawara Castle. This castle, which dates back to the 15th century, has been meticulously restored, allowing us to step back in time and experience a slice of Japan’s feudal past. Wandering around the castle grounds was like walking through a live history book. There’s a museum inside that houses samurai armor and weapons, which Bill found fascinating. We also strolled through the traditional Japanese garden there—it was so peaceful, with perfectly pruned trees and the sound of water trickling through the stone basins.

We also checked out the Enoura Observatory, and wow, was that an experience! Created by the famed Japanese artist Hiroshi Sugimoto, this place is a masterpiece blending art with nature. Perched on a hill, it overlooks the ocean and is honestly breathtaking. One exhibit, the “Sea of Time,” really caught our eye. It’s an intriguing array of stone circles set up to align with celestial movements, marking the change of seasons in a way that’s both ancient and timeless. The thoughtfulness behind it and the serene setting made this spot unforgettable.

Not to forget, Odawara’s natural scenery is just as compelling. We took a trip to the Hakone Open-Air Museum, which isn’t too far away. It’s an art museum, but not your usual kind—it’s spread out over a lush, green area with mountains and forests all around. Imagine walking through nature and stumbling upon incredible sculptures and art installations—that was our day at the museum. It’s a place where art meets nature, and every pathway turns up surprises that leave us more enchanted than the last.

Overall, our visit to Odawara was more than just a pit stop; it was a highlight of our trip. The blend of historical depth, artistic expression, and natural beauty made for a memorable experience. Whether we were soaking up the history at the castle, getting inspired at the observatory, or enjoying the open-air art, every moment felt like we were discovering something special.
