Finding Soba Jinbei all started with a spontaneous detour during a morning outing to Ginkaku-ji, where we soaked up the tranquil beauty of its renowned gardens. We had initially planned to swing by the Robert Yellin Yakimono Gallery, just a stone’s throw away from Ginkaku-ji, and then grab lunch in the Gion area. However, fate had other plans; the gallery was closed until 2:00 PM. With our stomachs rumbling, we decided to look for a nearby spot to eat. Most places were brimming with hungry families, but then, a huge sign caught my eye: “Soba Jinbei”. Being avid fans of soba noodles, it didn’t take us long to decide to give it a shot.
I don’t believe they take a credit card for payment (at least when we went there). So, be sure to take some cash. It is a family-owned restaurant with only one wait staff. Please be patient with the service. The taste of soba is worth waiting for. Bill’s favorite is a Tempura assortment with cold soba, while I usually go for a seasonal soba dish!
